Herbal Medicine Summer School A short intensive course covering identification, early herbal manuscripts, and visits. No previous knowledge required, just an interest in the subject. The course will be partly based at SLBI, using the garden, library and herbarium of dried specimens with guided walks. There will be visits around London, using public transport, including trips to Chelsea Physic Garden, The Wellcome Institute Library, the Royal College of Physicians' Physic Garden, and guided walks on Tooting Common, and Battersea Park. Part of the Heritage Lottery funded programme exploring the life of Allan Octavian Hume, founder of the SLBI. Giles Abbott will be presenting his story based on talks given at the SLBI, audience feedback and his own research. Suitable for all ages 11+.
After the story, Giles will answer questions and lead a workshop, (suitable for adults only), sharing some of the skills needed to tell a compelling story and teaching participants how to tell their version of Hume's story. Botanical Survey of St Leonard’s Churchyard, Streatham
Join us on a Botanical Survey of St Leonard’s churchyard, (at the junction of Tooting Bec Gardens, Streatham High Road, and Mitcham). Members of the Institute have been visiting St Leonard’s for several years and recording the plants which grow there. So far over 100 species of flowering plants and ferns have been recorded, and about 20 species of both mosses and lichens. We learn from each other, develop our identification skills, and welcome new pairs of eyes to spot previously unnoticed plants, and add to this long-term project. Brockwell Park Bat Walk
Meet at the Clock Tower at 7.30pm. We'll walk down to the ponds to find beautiful bats. Wear sensible shoes and dress for the weather. Children are welcome, but no dogs please.

The walk will take about an hour and will be led by Dr Iain Boulton who is both interesting and very well-informed as well as being possessed of a very infectious enthusiasm. Iain will bring bat detectors (highly sensitive high-frequency microphones and amplifiers) for you to use.

Your chance to help conserve and beautify this wonderful park.
TASKS TODAY - shrub planting & pruning/clearance as needed.
The Dig the Park horticultural conservation programme ranges across pruning and clearing overgrown areas, planting shrubs, herbaceous plants and bulbs, trimming lengths of native hedgerows to improve growth and habitat value to wildlife.
Hot soup & biscuits provided!
